Mission, vision, values and objectives

The primary mission of the Faculty of Geography and History is to organise, coordinate, and manage undergraduate and graduate studies, as well as other degree courses to be determined by the ULPGC, and related to Geography and History. We are committed to enhancing quality and efficiency of university teaching through our missions:

  • To enrich students’ knowledge of societies and their geographical environment.
  • To use methods, documentary sources, and computer systems for an objective analysis of historic and geographical information.
  • To contribute to sustainable economic and social development of the Canary Islands through our studies focused on the recognition of the territorial system as a whole.
  • To spread and show our singularity to other areas encouraging international relations.
  • To disseminate the research and studies reports undertaken in the field of social and territorial sciences through journals, seminars, conferences, colloquiums and meetings, etc., which would serve for exchange of research results.
  • To build relationships with firms and public entities in which our students can be taught and we can conduct professional projects in different fields of work.
  • To organise and promote seminars, conferences, and meetings, in order to encourage scientific exchanges.
  • To promote doctoral and research and professional master’s courses.
  • To encourage the continuous quality improvement in all areas of the Faculty, by assessing teaching processes and results, and satisfaction of various interest groups.

In this regard, the Faculty of Geography and History focuses on an innovative vision in teaching, research, administration, and activities of social impact. For that purpose, we consider that this Faculty can be a centre of excellence which focuses its efforts on:

  • The dissemination of historic and geographical studies from the Canary Islands embracing past, present and future. This may enhance the knowledge and actions contributing to the social well-being.
  • Knowledge of the island territory from an environmental perspective as a basis for spatial planning.
  • Introduction of new technological tools for the processing and exploitation of historic and geographical information.

The Faculty’s core values are as follows:

  • Commitment to continuous improvement of teaching and research focused on the knowledge of social, cultural and territorial realities of the Canary Islands.
  • Interest in contributing to the sustainable economic, social and cultural development of the Canary Islands.
  • Support for information society in the scope of geography and culture, by using computer tools focused on professional practice requested by private companies and the public authorities.
  • Boost to international relations and cooperation as a means to know other scopes, exchange knowledge and enrich theoretical and practical training through national and international conferences and research projects.
  • Diversity of subjects in the field of social and territorial sciences, which may help students and/or lecturers from neighbouring geographical areas joining the Faculty and strengthening the role of the Canary Islands as a strategic area for academic exchanges.
  • Creativity in research proposals, which will be focused on enhancing the understanding of the territorial system as a whole and the economic and social progress of the Canary Islands in order to strengthen the link between teaching and research.

The main quality objectives according to our mission, vision and values are as follows:

  1. To promote social demand for and interest in our fields of study among prospective students.
  2. To encourage continuing professional development among our teaching staff in order to help ensure competence to use new techniques, procedures and methodologies.
  3. To encourage students’ participation in national and international exchange programmes.
  4. To organise and develop sessions in academic and professional fields for our students in order to enhance their learning processes and professional skills.
  5. To promote collaboration between Governance and Administration to arrange training courses for non-teaching staff.
  6. To foster the assessment of our teaching and research organisation, and improve the dissemination of their results among the groups of interest.
